Wider urban zones: use of topology and nighttime satellite images for delimiting urban areas

چکیده
Abstract In the literature on definition of urban areas, methodological approaches are divided into formalist (aggregation by density thresholds) and functionalist commuting quotas). This paper proposes a mixed approach, in which territorial threshold from lower-level administrative unit is combined with brightness nighttime satellite imagery, intended as proxy variable for functional links. The objective to attain method delimitation be used various States Regions across world an iterative procedure, areas connected topological spaces. represents independent method, compared standards adopted national regional statistics bureaus, allows comparing infrastructural, economic, social data different cities world. Such hence described terms “real” dimension partially correcting bias related adoption perimeters “fact” when local authorities make decisions regarding them.

Vehicle Queue Detection in Satellite Images of Urban Areas
There is an increasing demand in traffic monitoring of densely populated urban areas. In our approach we use a priori information of roads location and focus on vehicle queues detection. In this imagery single vehicles are merged to either dark or bright ribbons and therefore can hardly be separated. The queues can be extracted as lines in scale space using a differential geometric approach. We...
متن کاملModeling of Urban Areas from High Resolution Stereo Satellite Images
Models of urban areas are an important input for many applications in the field of urban monitoring. Besides the creation and updating of maps from sprawling urban settlements the models are also used for simulation and planning in case of catastrophic events like flooding, tsunamis or earth quakes. With the availability of very high resolution (VHR) satellite data investigations of large urban...
متن کاملSynergistic Use of Nighttime Satellite Data, Electric Utility Infrastructure, and Ambient Population to Improve Power Outage Detections in Urban Areas
Natural and anthropogenic hazards are frequently responsible for disaster events, leading to damaged physical infrastructure, which can result in loss of electrical power for affected locations. Remotely-sensed, nighttime satellite imagery from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) can monitor power outag...
متن کاملSatellite radar anisotropy observed in urban areas
QuikSCAT backscatter is generally higher over urban areas than surrounding vegetated areas. Azimuthal anisotropy has been observed over some urban areas, but the strength of the azimuthal anisotropy in the urban backscatter signal has not been well quantified. This study investigates radar azimuthal anisotropy in urban areas. QuikSCAT L1B σ observations are compared for urban, non-urban, and un...
متن کاملMultiscale Geoscene Segmentation for Extracting Urban Functional Zones from VHR Satellite Images
Urban functional zones, such as commercial, residential, and industrial zones, are basic units of urban planning, and play an important role in monitoring urbanization. However, historical functional-zone maps are rarely available for cities in developing countries, as traditional urban investigations focus on geographic objects rather than functional zones. Recent studies have sought to extrac...
